This is the true story of Mary Jemison (1743-1833), who was captured, and then adopted by two Seneca women when she was 12 years old. She lived her long life among the Seneca and married two Native men, with whom she had 8 children. When she was 80, Jemison told her story to a minister and amateur historian, James E. Seaver. This is Jemison's own account, read by Grammy Award winning Oneida singer and songwriter, Joanne Shenandoah.
The 3 CDs run about 3 1/2 hours and include music written and performed by Shenandoah. Audie Award winner and Grammy nominee Rebekah Presson Mosby produced the book and provides an introduction.
"The Adoption of Mary Jemison" is from a painting by
Robert Griffing.
